Total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 125,000 in May, reflecting the end of work for thousands of temporary census employees, the Labor Department reported Friday. Private-sector employment was up by 83,000 jobs. The unemployment rate edged down from 9.7 percent in May to 9.5 percent in June.
