Michael Yon is a journalist embedded in an American Army unit in Afghanistan. He’s been writing for various papers, complaining that the Army can’t fire until fired upon (whereas Marines can fire at will as they deem necessary)—the same beef I had way back in 2006 when my own soldier worked for the start of the surge in Baghdad.
This month has been the deadliest yet since we went back into the Middle East. Most of the action is in Afghanistan nowadays, near where Yon is stationed with his troops. I imagine that pulling out of cities has contributed to this extra action. Whereas even the most stubborn city-dwellers find themselves privy to information, Afghans who encounter alien soldiers in the country probably still believe myths like the one about how Americans’ X-ray sunglasses allow soldiers to see through women’s hijhabs.
